If your family is holding a funeral at Oakworth Crematorium, you may never have been before, and not knowing what to expect can add to an already difficult day. This guide covers the practical details so there are fewer surprises.
The chapel has seating for approximately 70 with additional standing room, plus extra space in the entrance hall where the service can be viewed on a screen. Services are at 45 minutes intervals beginning at 9.15 am with the last one at 2.30 pm. There is a small car park with additional parking being located on Wide Lane. Services can be webcast and there are facilities for music and photo tributes.
Where it is
Oakworth Crematorium sits on Wide Lane, just outside Oakworth village, a short drive from Keighley, Haworth and Oxenhope. It serves most families across the Worth Valley.
Arriving
We will normally advise families to arrive around ten to fifteen minutes before the service time. Crematoria run to a tight schedule, with services booked back to back, so arriving in good time genuinely matters.
We will meet you there and guide you through where to go. You will not have to work anything out on your own.
What happens during the service
A typical service runs for a set slot — usually around half an hour, though longer slots can often be booked if you need more time. Within that, the shape of the service is entirely up to you. Some families have a minister or civil celebrant lead a full service with readings, music and a eulogy. Others prefer something much quieter: a few pieces of music and time for reflection, with no formal address at all.
Music can usually be played through the crematorium’s system, and most venues can handle both hymns and recorded tracks. If you want a specific song, let us know early so we can check it can be played.
After the service
Flowers are normally laid out in a designated area afterwards, where family and friends can look at the tributes and read the cards.
We will return the ashes to you within seven days.
A few practical things families often ask
- What should I wear? Whatever the family has asked for. Traditional dark clothing is still common, but plenty of families now ask for bright colours, or a particular football shirt. There is no rule.
- Can children come? Yes, and there is no age at which it becomes appropriate or inappropriate. It is a family decision.
- Can people attend remotely? Yes the full service can be webcast. Just ask your Funeral Director.
