If you are worried about how you are going to pay for a funeral, please know two things: it is far more common than people realise, and there is help available. Do not let embarrassment stop you asking.

Funeral Expenses Payment
If you receive certain qualifying benefits, you may be able to claim a Funeral Expenses Payment from the Department for Work and Pensions. It can cover burial or cremation fees, some travel costs, and a contribution towards other funeral expenses.
There are conditions around your relationship to the person who died and a time limit for applying after the funeral, so it is worth checking the current rules on GOV.UK as soon as you can. The payment is usually recovered from the estate if there is one.
Bereavement Support Payment
This is a separate scheme for people whose husband, wife or civil partner has died, and it is not means-tested in the same way. It is paid as an initial lump sum followed by monthly payments. Again, there is a time limit for claiming the full amount, so do not leave it.
Did they have a funeral plan or insurance?
It is always worth checking before assuming there is nothing. Look for:
- A pre-paid funeral plan — check paperwork, and ask us if you are unsure who the provider was
- Life insurance or an over-50s plan
- A death-in-service benefit from a current or former employer
- Payouts from a trade union, professional body, or a regimental or service association
Public Health Funerals
Where there is genuinely no one able to arrange or pay for a funeral, the local council has a duty to arrange a simple one. This is sometimes still called a public health funeral. It is a basic service, and the family has limited say in the arrangements, but it is a dignified one — and it exists precisely so that nobody goes without.
What we can do
If money is tight, tell us early. It is not a conversation we find awkward, and there is a great deal we can do if we know the constraints up front:
- Show you the genuinely lower-cost options rather than the standard packages
- Strip out the extras that add cost without adding much — limousines, printed orders of service, newspaper notices
- Help you look at timing, since some crematorium slots cost less than others
- Give you an honest, itemised written estimate so there are no surprises
